World Toilet Day

When I first heard that World Toilet Day was approaching I was as excited as learning about Talk Like a Pirate Day two months earlier. My shallow, pea-brained mind could hardly fathom the pranks we could get up to with such a festivity.

Mars™ bars stuck to the bottom of the staff toilets, plastic wrap covering others and removing all the toilet paper in the establishment flashed through my imagination. This was going to be one celebration! Who could have thought up such a wonderful idea?

I hurriedly scampered off to Google to see how others were planning to celebrate the day. Expecting lists of toilet pranks, base humour and venues to hang out with other revellers while watching re-runs of Kenny, it came as a surprise to realise that this was no joke.

In fact, after reading through the site it became clearly apparent that this was a day to be grateful for what we have and to delve into our pockets to help those less fortunate.

The World Toilet Organisation (WTO) is all about remedying the lack of sanitation in developing nations. This is no small feat as an estimated 2.6 billion people do not have access to basic sanitation.

The day is officially recognised around the world and aims to highlight the despairing need to help others in these grim situations.

Kind of a freaky coincidence. I heard about WTO for the first time today, but from an audiobook published over a year ago about Africa. I had no clue that today was World Toliet Day.
