Gardening tips, gardening info and heaps of ideas to help gardeners of all experience get more out of their hobby and out of their gardens.
"Gardening" and "Discovery" go hand-in-hand when it comes to enjoying our yards. We like to find things pop up from seemingly nowhere and surprise us. Like, the first daffodil declaring that Spring is near. Or, a seedling that has self-sown itself in another part of the garden.
But there are times when finding something in our garden may not be received as enthusiastically as those things. Here are some gardeners who got a little more than they bargained for;
So, next time you feel cheated at finding a snail hideout under a rusty bucket remember - it could have been much worse. At least snails don't explode (although it might not be so bad if they did!).

Oh. When I first read the title of your post I thought, "Squash bugs. Rabbits."
I guess those aren't so bad as body parts or weapons :P
Though the bird would have been sort of cool.

The bird would have been cool, possibly too cool to survive winter though.

Stuart, I have a good friend here on Long Island who has hybridized daylilies for 40 years (at least). A number of years ago he and his wife heard a horrible noise and came out to find a dirigible had crash landed smack square in the middle of his 1/4 acre plot. It had missed the airport that was a mile away.
Worse than the blimp was the press who came to take photos and managed to stomp on anything the blimp had missed. Honestly!

Melanie - Sadly I had to look up the word 'dirigible' to understand what you were saying. What an amazing story - one that I'm sure most gardeners could do without. Cheers for sharing.

Actually sea mines used to be a popular lawn ornament in west coast Sweden after the war. Not all of them were disarmed, but as far as I know no accident has happened...

Yes, before I read the post I too was thinking about Hosta Virus X, or that sudden oak death disease, things like that. This was amusing, and a bit mind boggling too--wouldn't it be nice if the ground could talk!

While much preferred to finding a bomb in my garden, I was not so happy to find a nest of Red Back Spiders.
