Leaving the flowers in the garden

flowers vase garden.jpg
For some gardeners it's the ultimate dilemma. While for others it's a decision that has been made aeon's ago and will not be reneged upon.

I'm talking about the choice to leave flowers in the garden or stuff a vase to adorn your home.

For me, it's all about the garden. On occasions I have snipped the odd rose or gorgeous gerbera to bring back inside and admire. But this is rare. I'm much more inclined to leave the beauty in the place where it originated.

My mother, on the other hand, will always cut her flowers and has no hesitation arranging an ornate vase to lighten the living room. To her, a rose left on the bush is wasted.

Do you bring your flowers inside or leave to admire in your garden? And, are you 'religious' about your decision or will it depend on the situation?

Don't you think there is room for both of you?

Snipping the rose off is not a problem because Mother nature will always provide two more for every one cut.

In my old Garden I had a wonderful tree Paeony and I would not dream of cutting off the dinner plate sized blooms. It was my pride and joy.

However, Love in the Mist, Rudbeckia, campanula always had a few blooms that would not be missed.

I'm for leaving them in the garden. With luck can see the flowers from inside the house too, and you don't have the mess of leaves and petals dropping inside, vases to clean etc.

I always plants some flowers - zinnias, especially - for cutting. Generally I have enough flowers in the garden so I can feel fine about cutting a few for inside too. Best of both worlds!

Hi Stuart,

This is something I feel strongly about, but I've never seen it discussed before... interesting topic! I vote for leaving the flowers in the garden. I almost never pick flowers to bring inside, although I grew up with a mother like your mother who enjoys her flowers more in vases in the house than growing in the garden.
