Gardening tips, gardening info and heaps of ideas to help gardeners of all experience get more out of their hobby and out of their gardens.

Ever since Michelle from GardenRant brought this picture to our attention, I've been chewing over in my mind as to a possible replacement for that rose.
I've read the comments on the GardenRant blog and understand it's historical importance as a sculpture (and that it probably has nothing to do with gardening!), however, I'm keen to know what others think should be planted inside that fist.
I agree with you Michelle. Roses are a little cliche.
Claire from An Alameda Garden thought that it would be better if the fist were holding a bunch of oxalis weed, root and all.
Should it have been sculpted with a weed, a hard-to-grow plant or some other inspirational floral symbol? And, if this sculpture was in your home town what would it be holding?
If it were in Busselton it would definitely be holding an arum lilly.
Comments
ANY replacement of a rose at any time, anywhere, would be appropriate! And the sculpture is totally unrealistic: how can anyone hold a rose like that and not get stuck with the inevitable nasty thorns??
There, that's my rant for the day.

Cool! A gardening blog. I love gardening when I'm not at my computer but it never occurred to me to combine the two! I found you on Craig's list of the Top 100 Aussie bloggers (I'm on too) and just had to drop by. I've subscribed and will be visiting the other gardening blogs on your blogroll. The closest I've come to doing a gardening blog is the photos on my photoblog of the recent International Gardening Show in Melbourne.

I do like the concept of this status - the way it uses the bricks like that.
But to answer your question: if this was in my hometown (Vancouver, BC), it would be holding a marijuana plant (ahem).

Hi. I saw this over at Garden rant as well and when they made the statement something like - "why a rose? should have been something else" - I just immediately started thinking "well, what would be better?". Unfortunately I didn't read the comments on garden rant's site so really I know nothing....but...it seems to me that the fist is such an image of defiance and strength, bursting as it is through the bricks. What is the rose? Maybe also a symbol of strength (pretty resilient plant - they flourish if cared for but still hang in there if neglected). It is almost certainly a symbol of beauty and delicacy. So, for me the image is both cohesive and incongruous. I kind of like that. However, to play the game...if it was in Canberra I'd nominate the fist to clutch a branch off a Eucalyptus tree - they are tough and appear everywhere in Australia.

Melissa, I like your interpretation. Solid.
Val, I'd be more concerned that the hand wasn't shattered from the entrance than being pricked with a thorn. I agree with you though - not a big fan of roses myself.
Andrea, holding a marijuana plant in public? Really? What do you people do in Vancouver?

If it were in my current hometown (Cleveland, OH) it would have a fistful of black-eyed susans. And because of that, I would immensely disklike it.

Most Vancouverites wouldn't bat an eyelash if they saw that, Stuart! We're famous for our "BC Bud." It's one of our biggest crops so is pretty commonplace.
