Vegiforms: Novelty Vegetables, Anyone?

Vegiforms.jpg
For those who struggle getting their kids to eat vegies - the battle may finally be over.

Vegiforms are a molded plastic product that you slip over your fruit or vegetables. As they grow the vegetable is contorted into the shape of the mold and produces some crazy outcomes.

The range includes 5 basic shapes: the Garden Elf, Pickle Pusses, and Ear of Corn; and the Heart and Diamond, which yield heart and diamond shaped slices when cut.

Angela wrote about her experiment with zucchini's last year and was doubtful of their success based on her friends inability to free them from their plastic prison.

Do these actually work? I can believe it for soft skinned veggies like eggplant, but their website lists pumpkin, squash, melon, gourds, zucchini and cucumber too! Sounds very interesting. I would love to hear from those who have used these successfully. Thanks for bringing them up!

You've raised a good question Marc. I can see these working on all types of squash and marrows and even cucumbers but the gourds and pumpkins have me a little stumped too.

The garden elf WORKS GREAT on large items like pumpkins and watermelons. The key is to remove the mold once the fruit or vegetable has filled it. Once the shape is set, it will continue to grow like it (think of a heart shaped balloon - blow it up bigger and it's still in the shape of a heart). I wish I had a picture of the watermelon I grew last year -- too cool!
