Urinating on vegies is saving Mexican slums

tire tyre mexico slums
Q: How do you get expensive fertiliser to slum dwellers so that they can produce their own vegetables?

A: You don't. You find an alternative that's readily available and produce a system that answers a heap of environmental problems along the way.

Bringing life back to some impoverished urban slums in Mexico City was the dream of Journey to Forever and their challenge had to meet four inflexible constraints;

1. Little or no land
2. Little or no investment in infrastructure
3. No purchase of chemical inputs, and
4. Be light weight for rooftop cultivation.

The idea that evolved after years of quasi-experimentation utilised the mass of car tyres that lay around as containers, used leaf litter as the medium for planting, and turned human urine and worm castings into an immediate source of fertiliser.

Another benefit from this project is that it allows families to grow enough for themselves but also produce an income from the excess.

That was an extremely interesting article, Stuart. It's amazing what can be achieved when people put their mind and determination into finding a solution to a problem. I hope this project expands to many areas of not just Mexico but also to the vast populations throughout the world who would benefit so much from being able to grow vegetables and other plants in this way.

Ironically, although we have plenty of room in our yard, I've decided to grow most of our vegetables in containers this summer, mainly because of the effort involved in trying to protect them from the heat and wind, using minimal water. So far I've planted tomatoes, lettuce, beetroot, zucchinis, rocket and several herbs. I bought rainbow chard and mixed capsicums today, as well as climbing beans and radishes, and I'm looking forward to seeing how they will all grow in containers.

This is wild! I wonder if you have to get the right dose to make it work. Sometimes I've heard of plants withering if the dogs choose one particular plant to pee at every day.

I thought I'd better add that I'm not using the same growing medium in my pots as they are in Mexico ... lol. No mention is made of how they acquire sufficient quantities of the necessary 'fertiliser'.

It would be interesting to know how the diet of these people affect the 'fertiliser'. I guess if their diet became more organic then it would be better for the plants.

I'm saying this because I wonder if there's a link between what dogs eat and whether what you say to be true Nelumbo.

Alice, I have no doubt how they acquire the quantity of necessary fertiliser. I'm more interested in how it's acquired. Do people just 'go' as they feel or is it collected and then fed over the plants?

Stuart - since most of the gardening is done by women, I rather think the answer to your last question is NO and PROBABLY.
