Can the Kenaf plant be our next source of paper?

kenaf-plant-flower.jpg A few weeks ago, Treehugger wrote a post on the Kenaf plant as a substitute for tree pulp in the making of paper. The Kenaf (hibiscus cannabinus) is a cousin to cotton and takes less mechancial processes to make paper than does tree fibre. And while Kenaf is a great renewable source for papermaking until now it's had some problems that have kept farmers away from investing in it.

The problem has been a black liquor that is left after the process of making paper has been completed. Disposing of this liquor has been a problem but research has now shown that a portion of it can be used as feed binder and the remainder will end up as fertiliser.

It will be some time before we're printing on Kenaf paper but the future for renewable paper looks a little brighter.
