How important is Gardening?

Have you ever wondered where "gardening" has fitted into the psyche of societies fabric? Is it an important part of our life? And, if it is,how does it compare with other things that also seem important?

Where am I going with this? Imagine you pick up the latest copy of New Idea and on the front cover is a picture of a celebrity gardener (I don't know...let's say it's Kerri). Or on the front cover of Ralph is Trey standing in front of his nursery holding a couple of new release annuals.

Mmmh...

It doesn't seem to be that gardening, although many people enjoy it, has a high profile in the media. But then I ran some queries at BlogPulse to see where gardening actually stands. Take a look at this;

Blogpulse tracks all blogs and their posts and this graph shows what people have been posting about for the past 6 months. Gardening, while not written about as much as President Bush (#4 on their Key People list), is actually as popular as Paris Hilton. That's right...Paris Hilton...the little spoilt upstart who everyone talks about gets just as much attention as gardening does.

So there you have it fellow gardeners...our hobby is important (that's only if you were ever in doubt!!!)

Hmm... Paris Hilton... somehow that doesn't really comfort me! lol.

I think that the internet, which includes blogs, gives the gardeners of the world a chance to connect in a way that was impossible before. We have been spoon fed information by main stream gardening media all this time.

I feel these blogs, and what is to come from this new media, will reinvigorate gardening and gardeners everywhere. It has me. I do believe this is the beginning of a gardening renaissance.

Wow, I'm on a magazine! How neat. Thanks for the mention Stuart :)
I'd have to say gardening is very important in my life. I seem to be consumed by it every summer. I'm very reluctant to let the plants go when the cold sets in. But...can't change Mother Nature. I find gardening very relaxing and theraputic...except while being bitten by mosquitoes. We have a plague of them after all our rain! It's certainly great fun being able to so easily see how others garden and communicate with each other about our projects, etc.

Actually it discourages me that she has escaped to infect another continent...
