Gardening tips, gardening info and heaps of ideas to help gardeners of all experience get more out of their hobby and out of their gardens.
Unlike Alice in Canberra we don't get to see such spectacular autumn colours. Here in Busselton our altitude above sea level is almost zero, we don't suffer from frosts and we're a little higher in latitude than our nation's capital city. All those variables combined suggests that leaf colour during autumn is usually devoid.
However, the closer we get to winter we are treated to such a (minor) magnificent display as the leaves colour and fall all in the same week. Our silver birch here have only just begun to colour and they will be bare within the next couple of days. My magnolia was the same and all that's left is a spindly stalk with tiny buds protruding from branch tips.
Some of our close neighbours have oaks and elms and even they're only recently starting to colour and fall. I think I'd like to witness an autumn where leaf colouring went on for some time and had such vivid colours displayed.

In that case, Stuart, I'll take more photos next Autumn just for you.
Although I love our four seasons, I'd also love to spend more time in your little corner of the world - two hours, two years ago just wasn't long enough.

Alice, if you're ever over this way on one of your little sojourns don't hesitate to call on us for some honest Busselton hospitality. You're right - two hours in this beautiful corner of the world is certainly not long enough. A few weeks would give you a greater appreciation and if you stayed for a couple of years you would never leave. But that may just be my bias speaking.

Sounds like you have ideas for a future vacation! Climates with colorful falls, often have cold winters too, so there are always trade offs! We have color, but then months of gray skys (but not too cold). Since you commented on my garden's namesake, Petunia the snake, I wanted to let you know she is back finally! I have a picture that resembles her, since she's camera shy. Not dangerous. I hope she eats slugs, but probably more worms. Happy fall!

Alice gave us a real treat with her colorful autumn leaves. My husband and I were surprised to see the fall colors in Oz. We didn't see them in the Port Stevens area when we lived there.

Paula - you're right about the cold weather mind you we've been enduring 3C mornings at the moment so it can't be much more to endure their winters - surely?
