Propagating from leaf cuttings

There are a few plants that can be propagated from leaf cuttings and the ones that are all have prominent veins. African violets and begonias are great examples of these.

This seems fairly insane that you could get new plants from just sticking a leaf in the ground but it is true and almost as simple.

  1. Select a mature leaf from theplant you're wanting to propagate. Remove the leafstalk from the end of the leaf and begin making slits in the underside veins without going all the way through the leaf.
  2. Dust some rooting hormone over the vein cuts and place right-side-up on top of some quality potting mix which has been premoistened.
  3. Place some toothpicks or wire through the leaf to keep it on the soil and then cover this with plastic or store in a greenhouse.
  4. Once the new growth exhibits 2 or 3 new leaves it is time to transplant. Cut through the original leaf around the new growth and transfer to their own individual pots.
  5. Voila! You have some new plants from a leaf - hard to believe, huh!
